“Well I don’t think that value in cattle is any different when it’s high, or when it’s low, the biggest trick is knowing what your costs are. There are some costs you can’t figure in. You just have to look at the historical data.” John Rose (20:57)

Today’s episode is one that has been in the works for quite a while, and we are excited to welcome Karoline’s father, John Rose to the show. We have a lot of people asking if it’s possible to get started in this industry if you weren’t raised in it and didn’t marry into it. John is a great example that it is in fact possible. Like he says, it’s possible if you are truly dedicated and have an optimistic look at what’s in front of you, because that’s what sets successful individuals apart. Tune in to hear more about his story, tips he has for those just getting started, how he values certain types of cattle, and his take on where the market is headed.
In this episode we cover:
The markets and what Karoline and John are both seeing from where they’re seated
Finding the opportunity in risk
How to properly value cattle in different types of operations
John’s pride in his children, and how to support the next generation so that they have a desire to be involved on the operation
John’s background and unique perspective on how to get started in the industry

Preconditioning and weaning calves is fresh on producers’ minds right now. So it makes sense that this is our first Ranch Curious episode topic! These foundational episodes are packed with information! They provide reasoning behind the ways things are done, and are for anyone curious about the industry.
Karoline and Jordyn talk about why producers decide to precondition and wean calves the way they do. There is a lot of planning that goes into these processes and numerous factors to take into account. Karoline explains these processes, and goes farther to explain her preferred methods and how making these decisions affects the markets. Tune in to hear what strategies ranchers are utilizing, and the why behind it all!
In this episode we cover:
Examples of common weaning programs, and how they’re used
How modified live and killed vaccines work, and their benefits
The cost associated with running cattle on leases, and how it affects the way people decide to meet the needs of their cattle
How certain cultural shifts are affecting the markets
Discussing high risk calves, and what to look for and avoid when purchasing cattle

“The price that four-weights are bringing, when I talk to people about penciling it out, it makes a lot of sense to sell those light calves, versus hold on to them until the spring. If you can get them moved, with what they’re bringing per head, I think you have to sell.” - Karoline Rose-Bohannan (16:17)

Blast From the Past - Listen to Breaking Into Agriculture with Cassidy Johnston on: Apple Podcasts | Spotify | Stitcher | Google Podcasts
Remember this episode from season 1? Knowing where to begin when getting started in Agriculture is very much still a topic of conversation now as it was back when we first recorded with Cassidy Johnston. Cassidy is a public speaker, consultant, podcaster, and avid advocate for the beef industry. She discusses how she developed a passion and drive to work in the beef industry from the suburbs of Denver. Her perspective as someone who didn't grow up around agriculture has helped her when communicating about the beef industry. It installed the importance of recognizing her own strengths and areas for improvement.
There's a place for anyone and everyone in the beef industry. It doesn't matter if you're a fourth-generation rancher or someone from the city looking to work a summer on a ranch.
In this Blast From the Past Episode - Breaking Into Agriculture with Cassidy Johnston, we cover:
Cassidy’s background and how it has pushed her along to where she is now.
Ways of properly communicating with those of opposing views on and off social media.
A brief overview of the enneagram and how it can be used as a tool.
Importance of connecting with people where they are at.
