On today’s episode, we talk to Doug Bean about putting technology to work on your operation and the value and efficiencies it can add.
Doug Bean is the Operations Manager at Noland Cattle Company in Lyons Colorado. He was born and raised in the great state of Kansas and comes from generations of farmers and ranchers that continue to work the land there. He has one wife and three kids and is still amazed Tami said yes to that first date. His oldest boy is a computer science major at Kansas State, his middle boy is a student at Northeastern studying Wind Tech, and his daughter, his youngest, is planning on going to Kansas State to study Agricultural Economics and he could not be any prouder of them and can often be heard bragging about them. Most days he wonders how he got here but mostly he is just happy to be here.
In this episode, we cover:
The technology their operation has implemented
Finding the sweet spot of what makes you more efficient vs what actually slows you down
How technology can streamline your systems and processes
How technology helps us to make decisions based on the data instead of on emotions
The importance of being a lifelong learner and always willing to get out of your comfort zone

Today we’re doing something a little different on the podcast. With such a busy week this week, and extra time spent with loved ones, we wanted to do a quicker episode. I’m going to answer some questions I’ve received lately, specifically, questions about cattle buying.
In this cattle buying Q&A, the questions I’ll be answering are:
Are auctions catering to buyers and letting you pick and choose?
Do you have any contracts for packing houses? How do they make money?
Why is it hard to get a buyer to come to the ranch?
How did you get a job as a cattle buyer and how did you get started?
